Cuéntanos un poco de ti, ¿Quién es Jaay Perez?

Nací en México en la ciudad de Oaxaca, vine a Canadá a la edad de 5 o 6 años con mi mamá y mi hermano. Crecí y fui a la escuela aquí, aprendí inglés fluido y aquí seguimos.

¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de vivir en Canadá?

La experiencia de poder conocer a gente de diferentes nacionalidades y culturas. Tengo muchos amigos colombianos, venezolanos, ecuatorianos y es una de las cosas que más me gusto porque a pesar de ser de diferentes lugares, aquí todos somos hispanos. También tengo amigos italianos y ha sido muy bonito para mí poder tener amigos de lugares tan variados.

¿Cuál fue tu primera experiencia con la música?

Desde chiquito siempre me gusto la música, yo recuerdo que cantaba muchas de las canciones de Alejandro Fernández porque a mi mamá le gustaba y yo también me ponía a escucharlo. Creo que desde ahí empezó mi camino en la música.

¿Quiénes son tus influencias musicales? ¿Quién y qué te inspira?

A mí hasta hoy me inspira Arcángel, es para mí un grande. También Jhay Cortez y Myke Towers son artistas muy grandes que ahorita escucho sus canciones y digo: “me gustaría alcanzarlos y ser como ellos”.

¿Escribes tus propias canciones? Si es así… ¿Cómo es tu proceso de composición?

Si, primero empiezo a buscar un beat, ya que lo encuentro, comienzo a buscar un flow, la melodía, el cómo va a ir la canción. Después comienzo con el coro, ya teniendo el coro, el verso se escribe más fácil y así voy haciendo mi música

¿Qué canción de todos tus lanzamientos es tu favorita y por qué?

Pues todas me gustan, pero en la que sí me divertí mucho es en la canción llamada “Los Lobos” ya que la hice con dos de mis amigos. Mi amigo Magic me ayudó mucho en la música, él fue el que me dijo para hacer esta canción y me puso el beat; esta canción es como un corrido-trap.

¿Con quién te gustaría colaborar?

He conocido varios artistas que igual van empezando, tengo un amigo que se llama Esco, es artista aquí en Toronto y me gustaría hacer algo con él. Es un chavo muy talentoso, lo conozco en lo profesional y es un buen amigo.

¿Cuál es tu canción favorita (de cualquier otro artista) de todos los tiempos y por qué?

Esa si está difícil, realmente no me podría decidir por una

¿Qué es lo más difícil de ser músico?

Tienes que estar constantemente haciendo promoción y estar conectado con el público por medio de redes sociales. Eso para mí es un poco difícil porque si no tienes un equipo, pues necesitas aún más tiempo.

¿Cómo defines el éxito como artista?

Para mí sería llegar a tocar a miles de personas, que realmente sientan mi música, que les agrade y les guste. El éxito es conectar el público y que se aprendan mis canciones de corazón.

¿Dónde te ves musicalmente dentro de 5 años?

Me gustaría ser bien conocido aquí en Toronto, crecer y desarrollarme aquí mismo y comenzar a expandirme ya con unos cuantos álbumes, por lo menos dos

¿Cuándo se lanzará tu álbum debut?

Tengo un par de canciones en lo que llamamos “caja fuerte”, pero creo que dentro de un año ya tendría algo bien preparado para todos.

¿Tienes algún consejo para los aspirantes a artistas?

Que le echen muchas ganas porque esto de la música no es fácil, pero también que se diviertan. Y sí, que sigan luchando por lograr su sueño. The artist spotlight y Latinos Magazine agradece que hayas compartido con nosotros.

Interview with JAAY PEREZ

Tell us a little about yourself, who is Jaay Perez?

I was born in Mexico in the city of Oaxaca, I came to Canada at the age of 5 or 6 with my mom and brother. I grew up and went to school here, learned fluent English and here we are still here.

What is your favorite part of living in Canada?

The experience of being able to meet people from different nationalities and cultures. I have many Colombian, Venezuelan, Ecuadorian friends and that is one of the things I liked the most because even though we are from different places, we are all Hispanic here. I also have Italian friends and it has been very nice for me to have friends from so many different places.

What was your first experience with music?

Since I was a little boy I always liked music, I remember that I used to sing many of Alejandro Fernandez’s songs because my mom liked him and I also used to listen to him. I think that’s how I started my musical journey.

Who are your musical influences? Who and what inspires you?

Arcángel inspires me to this day, he is a great for me. Also Jhay Cortez and Myke Towers are very great artists that now I listen to their songs and I say: “I would like to reach them and be like them”.

Do you write your own songs? If so… What is your songwriting process like?

Yes, first I start looking for a beat, once I find it, I start looking for a flow, the melody, how the song is going to go. Then I start with the chorus, and once I have the chorus, the verse is easier to write and that’s how I make my music.

Which song of all your releases is your favorite and why?

Well, I like all of them, but the one I had a lot of fun with is the song called “Los Lobos” because I did it with two of my friends. My friend Magic helped me a lot with the music, he was the one who told me to do this song and gave me the beat; this song is like a corrido-trap.

Who would you like to collaborate with?

I’ve met several artists who are just starting out, I have a friend named Esco, he’s an artist. I have a friend named Esco, he is an artist here in Toronto and I would like to do something with him. He’s a very talented guy, I know him professionally and he’s a good friend.

What is your favorite song (of any other artist) of all time and why?

That’s a tough one, I really couldn’t decide on one.

What is the hardest thing about being a musician?

You have to be constantly promoting and being connected with the public through social networks. That for me is a bit difficult because if you don’t have a team, you need even more time.

How do you define success as an artist?

For me it would be getting to play to thousands of people, that they really feel my music, that they like it and love it. Success is connecting with the audience and having them learn my songs by heart

Where do you see yourself musically in 5 years?

I would like to be well known here in Toronto, grow and develop right here and start branching out already with a few albums, at least two.

When will your debut album be released?

I have a couple of songs in what we call a “vault”, but I think within a year I would have something well prepared for everyone.

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?

To put a lot of effort into it because this music thing is not easy, but also to have fun. And yes, to keep fighting to achieve their dream. The artist spotlight and Latinos Magazine thanks you for sharing with us.
