¿Cómo nace Niagara Dog Rescue?

Yo creo que cada uno tiene un propósito y el mío creo que ha sido ayudar animales, yo cuando era chiquita me acuerdo de ir a casa de mi abuela y decirle “Tita yo nunca voy a tener hijos, voy a tener animales” y eso es parte de la persona que soy yo. Mi esposo y yo tenemos un hijo, y ahora que ya es más grande y ya está en la universidad, conforme fue creciendo cada vez me necesitaba menos. Entonces eso me dio tiempo a mí para poder explorar otra vez qué es lo que yo quería hacer con mi vida y empecé como voluntaria en una organización y de ahí de ahí salió todo, de ahí me invitaron a formar esto, una señora y yo formamos este rescate en 2015.

¿Cuál es su principal objetivo como organización de rescate de perros en Niagara?

Hay tanta necesidad, no nada más de los perros, de todos los animales, cada vez tienen menos espacio, menos posibilidades de sobrevivir, y eso desafortunadamente es la situación para todos. Honestamente yo no puedo ayudar a todos los animales, pero puedo hacer mi parte y de mi parte son los perros. Hemos domesticado a los perros desde hace muchos años para vivir con las personas y ahorita las personas los crían y si no los venden rápido, los dejan al abandono.

¿Qué dificultades se les han presentado en su labor?

Principalmente es la cuestión financiera, porque en el refugio todo mundo es voluntario, no hay una sola persona en este en esta organización a la que tenga un salario. Tenemos 150 voluntarios y no tenemos un edificio, por eso ponemos a nuestros perros con familias que cuidan a los perros mientras les encontramos una familia permanente, entonces así es como funcionamos y siempre nuestras dificultades son financieras. Otra cosa que es importante para nosotros es crear de la necesidad qué hay de ayudar, de ser darles un hogar temporal, de adoptar a estos animales y darles lo que necesitan, solo necesitan cariño y alguien que ayude con sus necesidades.

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de lo que haces?

A mí me llena el corazón al ver cada uno de estos perros, porque todos ellos van a confiar en ti, ellos van a dar su vida por ti y ver cuando una familia recibe a un perro en una casa y ver ese enlace que se forma entre el perro y la familia, es lo que a mí me da las fuerzas para seguir trabajando. También, por ejemplo en Ride 4 Paws, ver a estos motociclistas llegar tener y participar en un evento con la meta de ayudar a nuestro organismo. Yo siempre lo he dicho, aquí se puede ver lo peor de la gente, por un lado, vemos el abandono, el abuso y el maltrato, pero por otro lado también puedes ver lo mejor de la gente, como a todos aquellos qué se suman y quieren ayudar.

¿Qué mensaje le quieres dar a quienes aún no los conocen?

Que consideren abrir su casa, que se eduquen y sean conscientes de la de la realidad de la situación financieramente, donando dinero, donando artículos o cuidando un perro mientras le encontramos una casa permanente, o también adoptando, que al perro le toque una buena familia, eso es lo que queremos. Tenemos una frase “nadie puede hacer todo, pero todos podemos hacer algo”.

¿Qué realizarán para el evento del otro año?

Vamos a hacer otra vez el año que viene Ride 4 Paws, pero siempre tenemos eventos, es súper divertido el evento de motociclistas y lo haremos el 7 de septiembre de septiembre de 2024. Vamos a tener otro evento también en mayo que, aunque no sé todavía qué actividades tendremos, todos nuestros eventos los ponemos en Facebook y en nuestra página de internet.

How Niagara Dog Rescue Was Founded?

I believe that everyone has a purpose, and I think mine has been to help animals. I remember when I was a little girl, I used to go to my grandmother’s house and tell her, “Tita, I’m never going to have children; I’m going to have animals.” That’s part of who I am. My husband and I have a son, and now that he’s older and in college, as he grew up, he needed me less and less. So, that gave me the time to explore again what I wanted to do with my life, and I started as a volunteer at an organization. From there, everything developed. I was invited to form this, and another lady and I started this rescue in 2015.

What is your main goal as a dog rescue organization in Niagara?

There is so much need, not just for dogs, but for all animals. They have less and less space and fewer survival opportunities, and unfortunately, this is the situation for all of them. Honestly, I can’t help all animals, but I can do my part, and my part is the dogs. We have domesticated dogs for many years to live with people, and right now, people breed them, and if they don’t sell them quickly, they abandon them.

What difficulties have you encountered in your work?

Mainly, the financial aspect is a challenge because in the shelter, everyone is a volunteer; there is not a single person in this organization who receives a salary. We have 150 volunteers, and we don’t have a building. That’s why we place our dogs with families who take care of them while we find them a permanent family. That’s how we operate, and our difficulties are always financial. Another important thing for us is creating an awareness of the need to help, to provide them with a temporary home, to adopt these animals and give them what they need. They only need love and someone to help with their needs.

What do you like the most about what you do?

What fills my heart is seeing each one of these dogs because they are all going to trust you, they are going to give their lives for you, and seeing when a family receives a dog into their home and witnessing the bond that forms between the dog and the family is what gives me the strength to keep working. Also, for example, with Ride 4 Paws, seeing these motorcyclists arrive and participate in an event with the goal of helping our organization. I’ve always said that here you can see the worst and the best of people. On one hand, we see abandonment, abuse, and mistreatment, but on the other hand, you can also witness the best of people, like all those who join and want to help.

What message would you like to convey to those who are not familiar with your work?

I want them to consider opening their homes, educating themselves, and being aware of the financial reality of the situation, whether by donating money, donating items, or fostering a dog while we find them a permanent home, or even by adopting. We want every dog to find a good family. We have a motto, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

What will you be doing for next year’s event?

We will hold Ride 4 Paws again next year, which is a super fun event for motorcyclists, and it will take place on September 7, 2024. We will also have another event in May, and while I don’t know yet what activities we will have, we always post all our events on Facebook and our website.
