Opening night of the 2014 Luminato Festival, June 6, kicks off with the Pan American Tropical Triple Bill at the Festival Hub. This extraordinary night of music will feature the stellar collective of Cuban musicians, Interactivo, “the queen of Haitian song,” Emeline Michel, and legendary flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook with Mexican and South African-influenced singer Amanda Martinez.
For the 8th annual Festival, the Hub is getting a tropical facelift as it is transformed into CARDBOARD BEACH by the internationally renowned Cuban art collective, Los Carpinteros.
The Festival Hub’s Special Weekend Concert Edition of three ticketed events feature Grammy Award-winning house band for Jimmy Fallon, The Roots (June 7) , TV On The Radio (June 13) and six-time Grammy-Award winner, Ziggy Marley: The Fly Rasta Tour (June 14).
From June 7-9, one of Latin America’s brightest talents, Argentinean author and director, Mariano Pensotti will present the North American premiere his new theatrical creation, CINEASTAS, performed in Spanish & English sub-titles.
An evening of Brazilian Samba Soul features Aline Morales with her all-Brazilian set by flavouring traditional samba and bossa beats mixed with African and European spices. Hailing from South American musical royalty, Grammy-nominated Brazilian vocalist Bebel Gilberto is known for her adventurous blends of Brazilian, European and electronic pop styles, while never forgetting her roots.
The Colombia Cumbia Dub Club is a double bill of The Souljazz Orchestra, who blend the sounds of jazz, soul, Afro, Latin, and Caribbean rhythms seamlessly; and Sidestepper who bring together a glorious melting pot of sounds from all over the world, including Europe, South America, and Africa. Wrapping up the Luminato Festival is the programme Strings are the Thing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Peter Oundjian, who has curated a musical travelogue from the Western Hemisphere from north to south in honour of the 2015 PanAm/Parapan Am Games in Toronto.
